I hope people can understand this as well. These lenses take considerably longer to master than say, the kit lens. I use to look at the focal lengths and say this is a manual for beginners lens. You should know exactly what you are doing with this lens. You should also know all one stop increments after that!
So in order to get an idea of what type of images these great new lenses could produce, and how they stack up to the existing kit lenses, I let Canon send me two of each lens that would be “focal length equivalent” with some of their kit lenses. In other words: The little set of Canon lenses for the Rebel XSI, the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM, and the Canon 24-105 f/4L IS USM were put in the back windows of my car on a long, late-night drive home, and left there for two days. The zoom lens and 24-105 were kept covered as a reference to make sure we could exactly figure out focal length equivalent. We came for 36mm and 105mm. The other two lenses are the Canon 24-105 f/4L and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM. We then had our tracking software do a 50-meter (160-ft) run on the center of the left and right images through the two 24-105’s, the 24-105 f/4L (also), and the 50mm f/1.8 STM. We took this as a baseline and to see how the two new lenses stack up. For the purposes of this test, I chose to do mostly stills and occasionally videos of the Canon 50mm f/1.
Shorter focal length lenses usually suffer from chromatic aberrations and reduced sharpness, and since they are a fast wide angle zoom, you'd expect there to be an orginal bokeh as well. While the new Canon 1.6 40 mm F/2.8 STM lens is a general way to go if you want an ultrawide like the 50, the new lenses and Leica-inspired lenses are designed to capture the peripheral perception of subjects. 7211a4ac4a
